| The Real American Cabaret,
starring John Allen Harrett and Brennan Papke, is without a doubt
the most interesting and evocative productions that Boomtown has
ever performed.
Following the old Cabaret concepts of the early century, The Real
American Cabaret is a mixture of stage performance, choreography,
costuming and musical interpretation that combines into a compelling
theatrical fusion.
The series retells the story of Jacksonville's emergent creative
classes from one neighborhood to the the next beginning in the 1980s
through the end of the century. Written by Stephen Dare and masterfully
narrated by Kortland Bottger, each episode tells a human story against
a backdrop of mystery, sophistication and the unbridled energy of
American street culture.
John Allen and several guest songstresses form powerfully choreographed
vocal ensembles whose stage performance creates an alter universe
of intuitive musical emotionalism and pure storytelling.
Brennan Papke provides the musical basis and arrangements upon
which the Real American Cabaret is built.
The Cabaret presents a reworking of contemporary classics and modern
pop hits that have never been reworking into a cabaret performance
format, and heavily features the beat poets of the rock and roll
era.
Artists like Serge Gainsbourg, Leonard Cohen, and Tom Waits are
reinterpreted along with with modern expressionistic poetry of Simon
Lebon (Duran Duran) in such a way as to bring out the words behind
the famous melodies |
